Disappointment for the Moles this Saturday, when a Croydon Athletic side came to Walton Road and punished the Moles for the few mistakes they made.
The day was wet and windy, normal summer time weather in England and this made for a slippery surface for this entertaining opening day game.
Molesey started well when they took control of the early stages and made Danny Firkin in the Croydon Athletic goal work hard. First Moles defender Matt Ottley broke through midfield and fired a testing shot from 30 yards which the Croydon 'keeper easily gathered. Then shortly afterwards in the 10th minute Luke Edghill found himself running in on the Rams goalkeeper but his shot was easily blocked by Firkin with his legs.
The Rams were worried again after 24 minutes when a Sam Lampard cross found Chris Wales who volleyed on the turn and just cleared the bar. Not long after this James Mepham just failed to put the finishing touch on yet another good Molesey move, and this would prove fatal for the young Molesey side as the Rams made up for the early nervousness by firing past Windegaard with the last kick of the half. Sam Lampard failed to pick up a pass out of defense and Croydon Athletic swiftly broke through and caught The Moles flat footed, and Reggie Savage finished the move.
The second half started, and Moleseys woes were about to get worse. Molesey were awarded a free-kick near the halfway line, and confusion took over. It appears the Stef O'Brien back-heeled the set piece and the lively Moses Adebola ran through the confused Moles backline and slid the ball home to double the visitors lead.
Molesey now faced a massive up hill struggle against the confident Rams. The Moles attacked in numbers and after a few chances for the young Moles attack Croydon Athletic put the match beyond doubt when Adebola ran through and lobbed Windegaard from just inside the box.
