Moles Fail To Pop Fizzers

by Andrew Finch

Molesey 0-0 Sandhurst Town

Molesey’s four game winning run came to an end in an entertaining goalless draw against Sandhurst Town.

On the basis the Moles had the majority of the play and better goal scoring opportunities they may feel they deserved more than the one point, although the visitors defended exceptionally well and in skipper Grant Nesbitt had the games outstanding player.

Matt Nash replaced Wester Young in goal for only his second appearance of the season and looked comfortable and assured throughout, although he was rarely tested against a Sandhurst side missing top scorer Dan Simmonds.

It was the home side who had all of the goal scoring opportunities in the first half, with James McShane setting Lewis Ackerman clear inside two minutes, but with defenders breathing down his neck had no option but to shot from 20 yards out, and his effort was easily gobbled up by Asen Agov.

Andy Graves, Dan Coombes and Sam Lampard combined to present a chance to McShane after 22 minutes, but after getting the better of Matt Weston his toe-poke was superbly tipped around the post by Agov.

A lung-busting run from deep inside his own half by Arnold Tawonezvi would have resulted in a contender for goal of the season had Agov not got down to thwart the Moles once more, and after picking up a knock shortly afterwards Tawonezvi, Molesey’s best player up until that point, was a virtual spectator until being subbed early in the second half.

Moses Spencer flicked an effort goal wards from a McShane corner shortly before half-time that resulted in a mini scramble before the ball was hacked to safety, and it took until two minutes after the restart for the visitors to register an effort on goal, but Toby Jannaway’s weak effort was easily held by Nash.

Sandhurst thought they had opened the scoring when Mark Corbett saw an effort saved by Nash but the ball ricocheted off him and was heading goal wards until Rob Lewis made a terrific clearance from under his own crossbar with the visitors appealing that the ball had crossed the line.

Jannaway shot wide when well placed as the visitors attempted to turn the screw, although as the game reached its closing stages it was the Moles who should have nicked the three points, as McShane and Lampard combined to set up Shane Sinclair, but with just the keeper to beat his completely missed his kick, and with virtually the last kick of the game Ackerman’s first touch was uncharacteristically sloppy as he attempted to pluck a through ball out of the sky that would have left him 1-1 with Agov, but the ball ran harmlessly to the Fizzers keeper.
